Empowering Youth to be Agents of Change Through Digital and AI Skills

Every year on July 15, the world marks World Youth Skills Day to recognize the importance of equipping young people with the skills they need for employment, entrepreneurship, and active participation in economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development.

This year's theme, "Skills for a Shared Future," highlights a growing reality that preparing young people for tomorrow requires more than traditional education. As artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging digital technologies continue to reshape the way people learn, work, and solve problems, young people need future-ready skills that enable them to adapt, innovate, and lead.

The opportunity means so much more for Africa. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Digital Skills in Sub-Saharan Africa study, over 230 million jobs in Sub-Saharan Africa will require digital skills by 2030, with a projection of the digital economy adding $180 billion to the continent's GDP. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 also projects that AI and other emerging technologies will displace 92 million positions globally, while simultaneously creating 170 million new roles before the end of the decade, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs.

For Africa, which has the youngest population globally, with nearly 60% of the continent's population under 25 years old, this presents an opportunity to equip young people with the right tools to build careers, solve local challenges, and contribute meaningfully to the continent's development.

Why Digital and AI Skills Matter

Preparing young people for the future requires more than teaching them how to use technology. They need practical skills that enable them to adapt, innovate, and create value in an increasingly digital world.

Digital and AI skills can help young people:

• Build careers in fast-growing industries such as software development, cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing, and AI.
• Launch businesses and develop solutions that address challenges in sectors like agriculture, education, healthcare, finance, and climate.
• Access remote work, freelancing, and global employment opportunities beyond their local communities.
• Develop problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking skills that remain valuable even as technology continues to evolve.

Creating Pathways from Learning to Opportunity

Helping young people succeed in the digital economy requires more than introducing them to technology. It also means creating clear pathways that connect learning with practical experience, mentorship, and career opportunities.

For over a decade, Tech4Dev has worked to bridge this gap by providing digital skills training and advocacy programmes that prepare young Africans for the future of work. In 2025 alone, we directly impacted over 95,000 beneficiaries across 30 African countries, creating opportunities for thousands of young people to develop in-demand digital skills.

As the demand for AI skills continues to grow, Tech4Dev is also creating opportunities for learners who are ready to take the next step in their careers. The recently launched Women Techsters Sprint Program is one example. Designed for women in Ghana who already have foundational training in Data Science, Cybersecurity, or Software Development, the eight-week accelerator combines advanced technical and AI training with hands-on projects, mentorship, portfolio development, and career preparation.

The programme aims to fill the gap between learning a skill, landing a job, and ultimately earning a sustainable income. This is so because continuous learning and practical experience are what help learners transition from understanding concepts to solving real-world problems with confidence and to eventually contributing to the digital economy.

This year's World Youth Skills Day reminds us that preparing young people for the future goes beyond expanding access to education. It also means ensuring they have opportunities to deepen their skills, gain practical experience, and build careers that create lasting impact.

As AI continues to shape the future of work, young people equipped with digital skills will not only be ready for new opportunities but will also help define how technology is used to solve Africa's biggest challenges.
