What Is BPO And How Can It Become A Major Career Pathway For Young Talents?

Business Process Outsourcing, commonly known as BPO, has become an important part of how businesses get work done across different industries. From customer support and data processing to IT services and marketing, companies are increasingly relying on external teams to handle important business functions from another office, city, or even country.

For young talents building digital and employability skills, this creates another way to think about work and other economic opportunities. Instead of limiting career options to companies within their immediate location, BPO can connect skilled talent to businesses that need their services across different industries and markets, opening up career possibilities beyond the companies within their immediate location.

What Exactly Is BPO?

Business Process Outsourcing is when a company hires another organisation or external service provider to handle a particular business function on its behalf.

For example, an e-commerce company may outsource its customer support operations instead of building a large customer service department internally, while another company may rely on an external team to handle data processing, accounting, IT support, or parts of its marketing operations.

As businesses become more digital, the type of work that can be outsourced has also expanded. The World Bank describes BPO as the movement of entire business processes to third-party providers, whether those providers are in another part of the same country or overseas.

How Can BPO Become a Career Pathway?

One reason BPO can provide a useful career pathway is the range of skills and roles available within the industry.

For young people just entering the workforce, this could mean starting with foundational skills that prepare them for roles in customer support, data entry, or helpdesk services. As they build stronger digital skills and experience, opportunities can extend into areas such as data analytics, content and SEO writing, design, product support, and other more specialised roles.

In turn, this creates room for people with different levels of digital experience to find opportunities within the wider outsourcing industry. Someone does not necessarily need to begin with advanced technical skills, as foundational digital skills can provide an entry point, while continued learning and experience can prepare them for more specialised roles.

Why Is Nigeria Investing in BPO?

As more businesses outsource digital and business services, countries with a large pool of skilled talent have an opportunity to participate in this growing industry.

Nigeria has been taking steps to strengthen its position in this space. In 2024, the Federal Government launched the Outsource to Nigeria Initiative (OTNI) to grow the country's BPO and IT-enabled services industry and connect Nigerian talent with local and international outsourcing opportunities.

Another part of this broader push is the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) Programme, which is supporting skills development across Nigeria and preparing young people to participate in BPO opportunities within the digital economy.

What Does This Mean for Young People in North-Central Nigeria?

This need for skilled talent is where the iDICE Skills-to-Jobs Programme becomes relevant for young people in North-Central Nigeria.

Implemented by Tech4Dev in partnership with iDICE and in collaboration with Taltrix and TeleSoftas, the free programme is open to young people in Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory.

The programme aims to equip participants with digital skills that can be applied across different career paths, including opportunities within the wider outsourcing industry. Participants can build skills across three learning levels: Foundational, Developmental, and Specialized.

Training areas range from data entry, customer support and digital literacy to data analytics, SEO writing, UI/UX, cybersecurity, AI engineering, digital marketing, and more.

The programme also goes beyond technical training. Participants will receive employability and job-readiness support through activities such as CV reviews, interview preparation, and exposure to employers.

For young people trying to understand where digital skills can lead, BPO represents one possible career pathway. And the iDICE Skills-to-Jobs Programme provides an opportunity for young people in North-Central Nigeria to build relevant skills and prepare themselves for employment and other economic opportunities.
